Perisher Snow Tube Town

The largest ski resort in the southern hemisphere, Perisher is in the Australian Snowy Mountains in New South Wales, and one of the best places for a snow holiday in the world. With seven mountain peaks, Perisher provides runs and slopes for skiing, snowboarding and tubing and has 47 chair lifts with over 100 km of marked trails for every level of skier. There are also several levels of ski accommodations to fit every holiday budget. With facilities that include terrain parks, cross-country skiing, night skiing, one rider X course and one super pipe there is something for everyone.

Snow tubing is a lot like sledding or tobogganing, because it is also a winter time activity with lots of thrills. Steering is not easy, but Tube Town has dedicated slopes for tubing that have barriers on the periphery that guide the tubes on a safe course. Speeds can get very fast because there is little friction between the tubes and snow.

Tube Town is on Mt. Piper and has especially groomed lanes for snow tubing. It offers great high speed fun for everyone over two years old, and visitors race down the lanes in tubes and get a lift back to the top on the specially built rope lifts for tubing.

Perisher snow tubing requires no special skill, just the desire to enjoy a fast ride down the snow covered lanes in the organized and safe environment of Tube Town. There are also snowmaking machines nearby to make sure visitors have the best possible snow no matter what the weather.

Perisher snow tubes are the only tubes allowed on the slopes and there are two sizes. Two rope lifts will transport tubes and riders to the top of the slope. Depending on the depth of snow, the park is open from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm from Monday through Thursday and from 9:30 am – 4:30 pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are available at the Tube Town Ticket Office as well as snacks and drinks.

Most children and adults ride alone, but children who are less than 1.1 metres tall must ride with an adult, and children two years or under are not permitted to ride.

Snow tubing at Tube Town, Perisher Snow Tube Park provides great winter sport fun for children and adults who are not interested in skiing or snowboarding. No lessons are required, but the thrills are just as great.

Kosciuszko Snowy Mountain

The Kosciuszko area of Australia in New South Wales (NSW) is the home to Australia’s highest mountain and one of its most famous ski areas. The mountain itself is in the Kosciuszko National Park with includes the ski area and numerous lakes, streams and hiking trails. The National Park itself covers over 690,000 hectares of Alpine landscape. Kosciuszko Mountain is part of the Snowy Mountain Range, the highest on the continent of Australia and rises 7,300 feet above sea level.

Image via Wikipedia

The area surrounding the snowy mountain is a picturesque land with rivers, lakes, waterfalls, and green forests. Higher up the land becomes bush, with wide open, gentle slopes on the sides of the main snowy mountain that invite skiing. Ski resorts contained within the park according to the National Park website are the ski resorts of Thredbo, Perisher, Charlotte Pass and the Selwyn snowfields. The Thredbo resort has one of the longest drops in the world at almost 700 meters. During the winter season from June to October, it is not uncommon to have snow on the ground higher than one meter. Snow can fall here any time of the year; the weather is highly changeable.

During the summer, many visitors take the ski lift to the top of the ski run and hike up the path to the top of the mountain. Other common activities include fishing for trout in the streams, canoeing the waterways, white river rafting and exploring several caves on the side of the mountain. Horseback riding is available in the park and camping is permitted anywhere in the park. Australia’s highest public toilet sits at the top of the mountain. There are some off road trails in the park that can be driven using a 4×4 to see the area up close without walking.

The park is home to many unique species of animals and plants. Animals include the Corroboree frog, the mountain pygmy possum, and the dusky antichinus. Rare plants include the Snow Gum tree, the Alpine ash, and Mountain Gum trees. Wild horses roam parts of the park; some have been relocated due to their increased population.

For those that do not want to camp, there are cabins at several locations in the park that can be rented by visitors. The local ski resorts also offer more upscale accommodations as do some of the local towns within driving distance of the park.

The snowy mountain was named after a Polish general who performed heroically during the United States Revolutionary War. A Polish explorer was one of the first Europeans to climb the mountain. The Australian Bureau of Statistics website states that the current Mount Kosciuszko is the second mountain of the name. When more precise triangular measurements showed that the nearby peak Mount Townsend was actually taller than the former Mount Kosciuszko, the Bureau simply renamed the two peaks to allow Mount Kosciuszko to continue to be the highest peak.

The Kosciuszko area of NSW offers much for the active visitor looking for an outdoor experience. For those who simply want to take in the beauty of an Alpine mountain area or a snowy mountain, Kosciuszko fills that purpose adequately as well.

Ski buffs located all over the Southern Hemisphere are on the watch for the first signs of snow in Australia’s Perisher Valley. Perisher Valley is located in Snowy Mountains near the city of Canberra and has been home to local ski lodges since the 1950s. Although the official season does not start until June, many skiers hope to see a bright side to climate change that results in early and plentiful powder in the area.

Historically, the Perisher ski holidays season runs between June and October. The average daytime temperature during the season ranges from 4-10 degrees Celsius, and the average night time temperature drops below negative 4 degrees Celsius. April and May bring precipitation in the form of rain and slush depending on the temperature. Early snowfall is not unprecedented, however, and ski resorts and weather sites readily broadcast when the lifts open. The months of August and September traditionally bring the heaviest snow fall to the area.

Upon appearance of adequate snow levels in the area, the countryside not only becomes very pretty, but the Perisher ski resorts also come alive with visitors from around the world who wish to take part in the wintry fun. Perisher ski resorts offer many different activities and ski packages for those seeking the ultimate ski holiday. Snow boarders and skiers who prefer thick untouched powder may be able to purchase tickets for “first track” use of the ski slopes in the early morning hours.

Planning for a ski holidays early is not a bad proposition when Perisher ski lodge is on the top of one’s list of possible ski resort options. The Perisher ski lodge provides money saving ski packages to those skiers in the local area and traveling visitors who decide to pay for their ski holidays prior to the official start of the season. Accommodations range from comfortable hotels/motels to inviting lodges; housing options are available to suit every traveler’s style and budget.

Perisher ski lodge provides family friendly, fun activities for nearly everyone. Skiers and snowboarders find traditional action on the slopes. However, the lodge also offers its guests the options to go tubing and tobogganing. “Athletes” of various skill levels are welcome, and ski lessons are available to improve one’s skills during ski holiday. Musical entertainment is usually included on the Perisher ski lodge events calendar. One may find no better excuse for showing off those new winter ski outfits than the one offered by Perisher ski lodge.

A 44-year-old Swedish man was dug out from his snowbound car after being trapped there since December 19. His car was discovered by some snowmobilers a mile in the woods on an abandoned road. Details on how he became stranded there are very vague if existent at all. Whether or not he was reported missing by anyone at this point is unclear

The man says he didn’t have anything to eat but snow for the two months he was trapped in this vehicle. Temperatures were below freezing and all he had to keep warm was a sleeping bag. At least he had all the watering could drink from the snow he melted.

It is unbelievable the man is still alive after going so long without food and withstanding the frigid temperatures. An officer on duty at the local police department says they do not have any reason not to believe the man’s story about being trapped in the car for a long time.

Since he was rescued by the rescue squad and the police he is doing remarkably well for going through the ordeal he has gone through. Doctors in the hospital he is at said human beings would usually be able to live for about four weeks without food. Besides surviving off pure will and eating all the snow he could his body probably went into hibernation state like a bear does. Humans are known to be able to that. His body temperature was probably around 31°C. Due to his bodies low-temperature not much energy was used.

The man is reportedly awake and speaking and doing well given the circumstances. Everyone’s seems to still be waiting for an account and his statement of the events that took place and led up to his situation. He has not given a statement to the police the doctors or anyone else explaining what caused him to end up being trapped in his car. I know he did not like his snow accommodations and I’m sure he wasn’t sitting is car waiting on snow packages. So it seems to me there are some questions that need to be asked and answered.
